Mike Milbury Assaults Blogger

This afternoon I was at the Capitals vs. Penguins nationally televised game, covering it for CapitalsOutsider.com. Following the game, as I was waiting for the elevator, Mike Milbury of NBC walked up close to me. So I figured I could ask him about the comment he made during the 1st intermission, that upset many Capitals fans. I haven’t seen the video, but as I understand it, after Crosby scored two goals in the 1st period, Mike stated something to the effect of, Sid came into this game saying “Hey Ovie, I’m still your daddy”

So after Ovechkin scored a hat-trick and brought his team back from a 3 goal deficit, I thought it would be interesting to get Mike’s take on Sid being Ovie’s “Daddy” now. Mike didn’t appreciate the question, and immediately called me an asshole. He then proceeded to berate me for “being a jerk” and asking a question about a joke he made when the game appeared to be under control by the Penguins. Now I’m not sure if this is just Milbury’s usual personality, or if he was just upset after witnessing the Capitals comeback victory in overtime, but he seemed to be in a fairly foul mood.

At this point, I pulled out my Flipcam and gave him the opportunity to repeat himself:

UPDATE : Original video was edited and cropped. I received an email from someone asking to be removed from the video, which I have done.

Once the camera was rolling he wasn’t so loose with the words, so I turned it off and began to walk towards the elevator. Admittedly I stepped in front of him, however I was certainly waiting before him, and after he called me an asshole, I wasn’t feeling too generous with my space in a quickly filling elevator. Apparently I should have left the camera recording, because after I stepped in front of him, he pushed me from behind. Seriously, he pushed me from behind into a crowded elevator and expressed distaste for my positioning in front of him. He instigated the contact, I turned around and I think it is safe to say we both engaged both physically and verbally until some others present separated us. I don’t really recall what was said at that point, or how much each of us was pushing. In the absence of people pulling us apart, we would have probably fought.

Honestly, I was just asking Mike a simple question, however I really had no idea of his history. I didn’t realized I was asking a question of “Mad” Mike Milbury and that a simple question would cause the man to assault me verbally and physically. Apparently the guy has some anger issues :

  1. You get called an asshole so you take out your camera? Crying like Crosby

  2. Caps fans have to understand that we were all in a bad mood after seeing our boys lose. Ovechkin's good and all, but SID THE KID has the luscious lips that gets guys like us wet.

  3. HAHA! Watch the crawl at the 3:00 mark of that bottom video about Milbury.

  7. I would have preferred you question him about the NBC crew repeatedly saying that ovechkin hits to hurt….

  8. Milbury is an obnoxious hack… and blatantly, unprofessionally biased. He doesn't like being asked about an on-air comment he made? Then *don't make the comment* is my advice to him. Whatta schmuck, and good on you Phil for calling him on it.

  11. Bushleague move that gives all bloggers a bad name.

  12. Seated in verizon center at end of game under the box where Milbury announces. Already read his comment about crysby being ovie's daddy. Proceeded to yell out his name until he looked at us. We then yelled to him “Hey Milbury who's your daddy now?” Repeated it several times just to make sure he heard us. He gave us a dismissive wave with a sour look on his face. I think we lit the fuse before you dropped the bomb at the elevators! HAHAHA the guy is a true asshole.

  13. Bushleague move that gives all bloggers a bad name.

  14. I was present for this confrontation, waiting for the elevator as I'm a local reporter in DC. The blogger was wrong to confront Milbury about his comment the way he did. He came off as a petty fan and should probably not be allowed to cover Caps games anymore, regardless of whether he thought Milbury had put his foot in his mouth. And breaking out the camera TMZ style was just tacky. That being said, Milbury started the physical aspect by pushing the guy. Don't know if Phil said this in the post, but he pushed Milbury back, too, before they were separated. Just an ugly incident all around. No one came out looking good. But Milbury is a respected name in the hockey world … I just hope this Phil guy doesn't ruin access for the rest of the professional bloggers who generally provide excellent coverage of the Caps.

  15. As a NY Ranger fan and Long Island native I've heard and seen “Mad” Mike's BS for years now. What other country could a guy who's failed as badly as a GM as he did get a job on National TV?.I “met” him early one morning grabbing a newspaper at a store close to my job and knowing who he was I held the door for him…not a word,no thanks no nothing,so I mumbled to myself “your welcome” and he shot me a look.I'm no small guy and while I wasn't looking for a fight I was more then ready to get into it if need be,I figured I could take him since he wouldn't be able to hit me with my shoe. He's a total classless jackazz.

  16. I'll admit that I am certainly not without fault in this situation. I feel the original question I asked him was justified, and I believe I asked it in a light-hearted manner. I did not anticipate the reaction he had to my question, and I admit that once he gave me his initial response, I egged him on some. So yeah, I know I look pretty bad in that short video, but its the only video I have of the incident. His demeanor completely changed once I pulled the camera out, and as admittedly unprofessional as it was for me to pull out a camera, I would argue it was even more unprofessional for him to call me an asshole for asking him a question.

He doesn't know me, and I guess if he did than he wouldn't have reacted in that manner. However I don't know him either, and I don't take too kindly to someone I don't know calling me an asshole. That doesn't mean I am not an asshole, or not a jerk, it just means it wasn't right of him to say that to me as a response to an honest question. He works for major networks, and is a public figure. People expect more of him, and just because the camera wasn't rolling doesn't give him the right to be a condescending prick to me. So the camera was an attempt to expose him, but as expected he quit talking when I turned it on.

It was after I turned the camera off that he pushed me from behind, and regardless of what we said to one another, there was no reason for him to escalate the situation by pushing me. As I said in the article, I was unaware of the full history of Mike Milbury. I didn't know I was messing with a ticking time bomb. I didn't ask him the question in an attempt to start a fight, I legitimately wanted to know his thoughts on a comment that he made that had upset many people.

So I am more then willing to admit that we were both wrong in this situation, but I doubt you'll get the same out of him.

  17. You act and sound like a scared little girl. Could hear the fear in that sad whine you call a voice. I wish he had stuck that camera up your ass but I'm sure you would have moaned with pleasure.

  20. wow.

the irony is comments like this is what makes them funny.

  21. Milbury's a fool, but this blogger is worse. Crosby's got a Stanley Cup, Ovie's a diving joke who couldn't find the defensive zone with a map.

  23. Paydirt! I never liked this guy's reporting, now I know why. He's a moron! His name was vaguely familiar to me, in the same way that a lot of these TV color guy's names are….Craig Laughlin, Darren Pang…but who knew this was the same stick-swinging-coach moron from Boston…and the fan-shoe-whacking idiot player in the stands….and now a reporter-shoving NBC sportscaster…all named Mike Milbury. Whattadouche.

  25. Obnixous hack is the least of it. Biased, all around a-hole. Yep, that's Milbury. This is the same jackass who referred to the “Crapitals” on air last year. The same moron, who on HNIC, was lambasting Don Waddell for the Kovalchuck trade with NJ. I seem to recall that Mikey managed to drive the NYI's into the ground during his tenure as GM. Pot-Kettle-Black, Mike.

    Good on ya, Phil.

  26. Way to make bloggers look bush-league.

  27. Love the world we live in. You ask a snarky question and someone with a small amount of fame insults you, so you whip out a camera, knowing full well that you are going to run home to your computer and upload the footage. You should have stuck to comic books and dungeons and dragons.

  28. “But Milbury is a respected name in the hockey world…”

HAHAHAHA…that's a laugher. Respected by whom? There's a reason Mikey Milbury ain't workin in the NHL and is trolling around CBC and NBC.

  29. Sounds like this blogger has a bit of sand in his vagina. “I pulled out my Flipcam.” what are you, 9? you sound like the don't-taze-me-bro guy. You stuck your head in the lion's mouth (did you really expect kind words in return for such a lame attempt at baiting him?) and then you didn't like his response. Frankly, after that spectacular collapse last year in the playoff in which Crosby went on to win the Cup and Ovechkin went on to work on his short game, sounds like Crosby's still Ovechkin's daddy.

  30. You went looking for a fight, and you got it… so what's the issue? You feel you have been wronged?! You got what you wanted and deserved, I hope they ban you from reporting for the Capitals, you are an asshole!

  31. It was a great game and you guys deserved to win, congrats seriously. We still have the big shiny silver thingy though.

  32. You deleted my comment? I wonder if you deleted some of Milbury's comments from the story too…

  33. Youre supposed to be a Hockey fan and you don't know who Mike Milbury is? Kind of pathetic.

And this blogger is a total amateur. This whole give-bloggers-press-credentials thing has already become a punchline for both the teams and the legit media, and this dbag just proved it yet again. Nice going a-hole. Milbury should have shut the elevator door on your face.

  34. Hopefully they take away any press passes that you have.

  35. I couldn't agree with you more.

  45. No comments were deleted. It may have been filtered for spam. I'll take a look and see if it is in there, but in general we don't delete comments.

  46. Any journalistic right you had to ask Milbury the question was destroyed by the amount of douche you exhibited. Have fun blogging from home.

  47. you're supposed to be a “hockey Blogger”…and yet you know nothing about Mike Milbury??? and to post the video of the shoe incident as if you were “educating” hockey fans. The shoe incident is one of the most historically well known events in the history of the sport. Have to question the Capitol organization on whom they're giving out press passes to. Very unprofessional.

  51. MIke can tend to get a little upset. I don't know why he would be upset the come back by the Caps though being a Bruins man?

  54. hi mr. douce. Mike Milbury is my uncle and you deserved it…. he is extremely respectful until assholes like you get in his way… you should probably shut your mouth and realize how unprofessional and whiney you sound because you posted this blog complaining about how you egged on a fight with someone who could kick your ass.

  55. You're maybe one of the most insecure people i have come across in a long time. You refer to the guy is who played in the NHL, took the Bruins the farthest to the cup in a very long time, and coached and GMed who now works on television as an obnoxious hack and clearly you are unintelligent because you spelled obnoxious wrong. NICE. so why don't you go play professional hockey or at least get a job on t.v. doubtful.

  60. And yet, you try to be smart and point out a misspelling, yet you can't even pay attention to your own errors to the English language. Insecure? I don't see it, but, then again, you're the professor, so you must comprehend things that others do not.

Milbury's a jerk and a bully, who has no tact or control over his mouth, in what should be a professional setting. He shouldn't be allowed on t.v. if he can't commentate without controlling his mouth.

  61. If you asked him your initial question about his Ovechkin/Crosby comment in that needling, whiny sort of tone you display in your short video, I can see why he called you an asshole. I can't say I agree with everything Milbury says on the air, but I have to give the guy credit for saying what's on his mind seemingly without fear of offending fans or network bigwigs. The guy's got balls, there's no denying that; he doesn't mince words. You pretty much know what's going through Mike's head at any given time. And what kind of “hockey blogger” isn't familiar with Mike Milbury's past? I mean, I can understand the Kings fan on here not knowing much about him, but if you're covering hockey I think it's pretty sad that A) you claim not to have been familiar with Milbury's reputation, and B) you post the infamous Madison Square Garden incident on here to give an indication of what an animal Milbury is….who HASN'T seen that already? Like someone else said before me on here, that's a very well-known incident, and I feel you didn't need to post it. After he called you an asshole, you should've written it off as Milbury in a pissed off mood and perhaps not to be trifled with and let it go, but instead you pulled out a camera like those idiotic “investigative reporters” who needle and instigate conflicts with people on the late news, and that's pretty bush league, if you ask me. I think you should be blogging from in front of a tv on a laptop instead of with a press pass.

  65. It is clear to anyone watching CBC Hockey Night In Canada that Milbury is auditioning for Coaches Corner gig. This is only way for him to keep his job trying to “act” like a bully. Every hockey panel needs an antagonist, but he's evolved his role into a side show freak. Some watch NASCAR for accidents, well consider Milbury televised Hockey's collision. He is also bitter because of huge ego, believing he deserves more than his hockey outsider status. He truly believes he's smarter than majority of NHL GM's, well just look at his record as NY Islander GM, pathetic.
Sad that a beautiful sport like hockey still employs WWF tactics to attract fans.
Well the true winner is Milbury, still earning a pay cheque from hockey, otherwise how else could he earn a living, Amway or selling insurance on pure commission?

  67. Milbury might be an ass, but he’s entertaining. He says what hockey players are thinking (the ones that actually skate on ice and not just play it on X-Box in their parents’ basement.

  68. Really? You think hockey players agree that it’s their own fault somebody else smashes them in the head, and if they don’t like it they shouldn’t play hockey? I’d be willing to bet you’re wrong.

And do hockey players agree that the Olympic slew-foot was just the player “protecting himself” even though it happened long after the play was over and the threat was long gone?

Hell, you only have to watch Jeremy Roenick’s reactions and facial expressions toward the crap Milbury spews, to know that you’ve seen at least one hockey player who disagrees.
