Manny Legace

St. Louis Blues goaltender Manny Legace left Friday night’s game against the Los Angles Kings after one period due to a hip injury that was later diagnosed as a strained left hip flexor. The injury occurred when Legace slipped on the carpet placed on the ice for vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor Sarah Palin. Palin was there to drop the ceremonial first puck before the contest.

According to Legace and the Belleville News Democrat the inury occured as follows:

I went to go step on the ice and the (arena worker) goes, “Watch the carpet” Legace said. He had his foot there holding it, so I figured it would be safe to step on. As soon I went to step down, he took his foot off. As soon as I stepped on the carpet, the carpet just shot out and my leg kept going. My other (leg) was still on the bench and I felt a pull right away. I was just hoping it would go away.

Legace attempted to play through the injury, but ended up allowing two goals on 12 shots before leaving the game. His status is day to day, but he is expected to miss Saturday’s game aginst the Florida Panthers.

Here is the video from Legace’s injury, and his favorite VPILF’s visit to the Ice.

This isn’t the first bizarre injury for the Blues this season. Defenseman Erik Johnson was lost for the year after tearing his ACL and MCL while riding on a golf cart at a team tournament, and goaltender Chris Mason is out indefinitely after undergoing an emergency appendectomy.
