Cheick Kongo vs. Pat Barry was Explosive

Sunday night was UFC on Versus 4 and there was a lot of controversy surrounding the event. Mostly because of the fact that headliner (and much more prominent fighter) Nate Marquardt failed his medical and was immediately cut from the UFC by Dana White. Nate was my favorite fighter by far, and it was really disappointing that he gained so much publicity as of late and was making a 3rd try at the belt and than this happens? It’s actually frustrating to be a fan of this guy.

Anyway, despite my favorite fighter possibly having Hepatitis or AIDs; the night ended up having GREAT fights. One of my other favorite young fighters is Charles Oliveira who won his contest and later had it overturned to a No Contest due to an illegal knee. Though he still managed to get “Fight of the Night” honors and the bonus. Meanwhile, I’m also a big fan of Joe Lauzon whom had a beautiful kimura and earned Submission of the Night.

As for one of my most hated fighters, one happens to be Joe “Daddy” Stevenson. Stevenson just lost his 4th match in a row and looks like he will either be cut after this match or his next one. Another one is Matt Mitrione who also took his match in impressive fashion knocking his opponent out in the second round. It was his fifth win in the UFC and fifth win in general. Despite my hatred, he’s shaping up to be a good fighter. He most likely would’ve had the KO of the Night until the headliner…

When Marquardt stepped out v. Rick Story, Charlie Brenneman stepped in. Surprisingly, Brenneman took the decision in a wrestling-heavy match. Anyway, without Marquardt that match didn’t have much star-power to be a “headliner” so they went with the hard hitting Pat Barry v. the gigantic Cheick Kongo.

I hope by now you’ve watched the video I’ve included at the top but if you haven’t, here’s a break down. Pat Barry basically knocks Kongo out on his feet. Barry gets Kongo back peddling with some heavy strikes and then Kongo digs in and clocks Barry right behind the ear with a hard right hand. Immediately after that, Barry over extends himself (most likely due to being a little too eager after smelling blood and wanting to finish the fight) but Kongo catches Barry with a BIG right uppercut and sends Barry down. Kongo hops on top and capitalizes to finish the match. Kudos to the referee for not stopping the fight after Barry hit Kongo to deliver a really dramatic ending to a very awesome, very quick fight.
