2016 Red Bull GRC Header 560x186This past weekend, the Red Bull Global Rally Cross (GRC) returned to the Nation’s Capital and we were once again on-hand for the epic action. Last year we were only able to make it downtown for practice and qualifying, but this year we made sure to keep our calendar open for the main event in Washington.

Our day began with an awesome VIP tour courtesy of BFGoodrich, and led by race car driver, Andrew Comrie-Picard. ACP took us into the paddocks and gave us the inside scoop on the drivers, teams, vehicles, track, and even the tires. BFG is the official tire sponsor and supplier for Red Bull GRC, and they developed a tire specifically for the demands of Rally Cross racing. However with rain in the forecast for the final race, ACP showed us how the tires are cut to handle the wet conditions. The track was definitely sloppy for the main event, with the dirt section turning into mud. See our view of the race in this quick video we put together from our experience :

In the end, Scott Speed was able to finish a perfect weekend with 1st place in his Volkswagen Beetle. He was joined on the podium by Patrik Sandell in a Ford Fiesta ST, and his teammate Tanner Foust in another Beetle. VW is a major sponsor of the Washington race, since they are headquartered in the area, so their strong showing was well received by the somewhat biased crowd.

“Thank you so much to the fans who came out here at our nation’s capital,” an elated Speed said from the top step of the podium. “There’s no question that this is the race that we all look forward to the most. It’s such great racing here, and we are back in the hunt—two wins and we are on a great roll!”

We’ll leave you with the official highlight video of the awesome action from our friends at Red Bull :
